Scottish Motor Sports (SMS) was formed in 2011 and consists of representatives of two- and four-wheel motor sport, including the MSA car clubs through the Scottish Association of Car Clubs (SACC), the kart clubs through the ASKC, and Knockhill, while the Scottish Auto Cycle Union (SACU) represents the interests of the two-wheel community.

SMS is not a new governing body or a new association; it is a strategic body, designed to speak with one voice about all things motor sport. It is chaired by Tom Purves, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club and non-executive Director of the Motor Sports Association.

SMS will provide a channel for motor sport to talk with Scottish Government and its associated agencies (Sport Scotland, Event Scotland, Visit Scotland, etc), distilling a co-ordinated message from the entire motor sport sector.

The first output of this new group is a brochure that has been designed to raise awareness of the great impact that motor sport has had on Scotland’s heritage over many decades, both on two wheels and four.

SMS represents an exciting opportunity to ensure that the entire sport, including clubs and competitors, benefits from being part of a government-supported initiative to create higher quality venues, better competition opportunities and stronger career development possibilities for Scottish drivers, marshals and associated individuals, all the way from the grass-roots to international level.

There is no company or commercial interest governing any of this activity and consequently no difficult issues of ownership, so all offers of support will be welcomed that can reinforce the position of motor sport within the fabric of Scottish society.
