SMS STUDENT CHALLENGE EVENT

Spirits were high as the sun shone down over Knockhill Racing Circuit during the second SMS Student Challenge of the year. On Saturday 1st October, 59 students from across the country travelled to Knockhill Racing Circuit to try out different forms of motorsport and endeavour to be crowned the victor! From the four Universities that attended the event; Edinburgh, Heriot Watt, Robert Gordon and Strathclyde; three groups were formed.

The weekend of the 5-7th August saw the inaugural Ignition Festival of Motoring event visit the SECC in Glasgow; a motoring festival that included exhibitions, driving displays and Glasgow’s first ever street circuit.

The future growth and development of motor sport in Scotland has been strengthened by the appointment of Gillian Sefton as Development Officer for Scottish Motor Sports. This appointment follows our recent launch event, where we announced Sportscotland’s commitment to invest into the development of motor sport over the next four years.

Motorsport legend Sir Jackie Stewart joined representatives from sportscotland, the Motor Sports Association, and the Scottish Auto Cycle Union to announce a new partnership to grow the motor sport in Scotland.

A cold but sunny Knockhill racing circuit played host to the SMS Student Challenge on 5th March. The event, which is running for the second year, attracted almost 50 students from across the country. Teams were fielded from; Aberdeen University, Edinburgh University, Edinburgh College, Robert Gordons University and Strathclyde University.

The news has broken that a new three-day motoring festival will be greeting the streets of Glasgow this year, starting on the 5th August.

COMPLETION OF 2016-2020 STRATEGY

The SMS 2016 – 2020 Strategic plan has been completed and presented to Sportscoltand. The completion of this strategy marks the culmination of 4 years work from the SMS committee, which was initially formed in 2011. SMS was formed as a collaboration of the two governing bodies for motor sport in Scotland; the SACU and the MSA.
