Scottish Motor Sports is delighted to announce the launch of applications for the 2018/19 SMS Academy programme.
The SMS Academy initiative was launched for the first time last year to support promising young SACU riders and MSA drivers in Scotland. Over the past year, the programme has worked with a group of 23 riders and drivers, who were selected through application. In this time, the members attended four specialist workshops designed to support the athletes on a range of topics relevant to their development, from fitness and nutrition to sponsorship and developing a brand.

The 2018/19 SMS Academy will support up to 20 competitors aged between 14 and 20 years of age. The programme will once again consist of 4 classroom based sessions, which will run between October 2018 and August 2019. The SMS Academy will be delivered by qualified motorsport coaches and will support members in all aspects of their development, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to maximise their performance. The coaches will deliver session on a range of topics such as; fitness and nutrition, sponsorship, media skills, technical riding & driving theory, career planning and much more. There will also be a special session near the start of the programme specifically for the parents of all the selected athletes. The purpose of this session will be to explain the ethos of the SMS Academy and to help develop their own coaching skills to enable them to best support their child to implement the knowledge gained throughout the Academy programme.
The SMS Academy will run in line with the ethos and principles of the MSA’s Academy programmes and for four wheel competitors, it will act as the talent pool for the MSA Academy.
Selection for the SMS Academy will be carried out via an application process. All applications will be reviewed by a panel comprising of a representative from the SACU and MSA plus a member of the SMS development team. Traditionally, talent development initiatives have focussed support on rallying and racing; the SMS Academy aims to support competitors across SACU and MSA motorsport and we therefore welcome applications from all disciplines.
Further details, including eligibility criteria, can be found in the application form. Applications open today (3 August 2018) and close at 12:00hrs on 31 August 2018.
The successful applicants will be announced at the the programme launch in October.
