On the 2 of October, students from West Lothian College attended a gymkhana style event hosted by Monklands Sporting Car Club in partnership with SMS at Forrestburn. As an added spectacle, the University of Glasgow race team had arranged to demonstrate their Formula Student car at the venue. However, unfortunately on the day, the team experienced logistical issues and were unable to make it along. Following positive feedback from everyone involved, additional events are being planned for 2020. We would like to pose an extra special mention to Darren (pictured) who took home the driver of the day award for his efforts in spite of having never been behind the wheel before the day of the event.
On the 9th of October, ten students from The University of Edinburgh took part in a 60 minute ‘Le Mans’ style tag team event at Scotkart Cambuslang. Following their experience, the students commented that it was refreshing to try out a different style of karting than they were used to.
The 23rd of November saw seven students from three Scottish universities take part in a taster session with SACU associate member club and charity, iMotoX. The session allowed students to try the electric version of the motocross discipline in a fun and controlled environment. The session was such a success that a preliminary booking has been made for February 2020 to run a similar event.
SMS held the third annual club development day on the 30th of November at Blair Drummond Community Hall in Stirling. Designed to be fully interactive, engaging and provide maximum opportunity for networking between club members across two and four wheel motorsport, the day included discussions and workshops centred around:
The second session of the day, ‘Managing and Motivating Volunteers,’ was delivered by external partner Chris Reid. SMS and club representatives who attended were in agreement that the session was extremely useful and got everyone thinking about ways they could better support existing volunteers and attract new volunteers into their clubs. Collectively, we would like to extend a huge thank you to Chris for his thought provoking, interesting delivery!
From the 19 original signups, the event hosted 13 guests on the day. Representatives from 11 different two and four wheel clubs across Scotland attended.
The partnership between Monkland’s Sporting Car Club and ‘Shotts Getting Better Together’ has been developing over the past few months. Both organisations have agreed to plan and deliver the first stage of their project in early 2020; this involves an upcycling project to convert an unused shipping container in to a meeting point for the Men’s Shed group at MSCC’s Forrestburn facility. Proposals for the partnerships are currently being drafted.
SMS have signed up to become a mentee organisation as part of a career development programme exclusively offered to individuals who wish to work in the sports industry. The programme aims to provide mentoring, placement and networking opportunities with sporting organisations nationwide.
